Eventually, after a few aborted “first steamings”, I managed to get the engine up to pressure, and tested the safety valve. It’s a bit alarming when it goes off as it makes a hell of a noise (it made me jump and I was expecting it!).
To my great relief and amazement, the engine actually ran the first time I got it up to pressure. You can see this in the video below. The chuffing noise was lovely. The whistle sounds a bit strangled on this video; it’s taken some fiddling about, but it sounds a lot better now!
