Having started the first rear wheel late July, I finally finished the painting of both wheels late October! Each coat of paint took two hours, and I had to do two coats of primer, two of undercoat, and two of  gloss.

The lining was done using a special lining tape which has two lines of tape with an accurate spacing on a backing tape. Peel off the backing tape, paint the space between, then peel off the tapes. Pity the black paint didn’t stick so well; the lining tape for the cream colour took great chunks away, so I had to redo several black lines; I gently sanded the red to give it better adhesion this time.

For the fishtails I bought a stencil cutting machine. I drew the 50mm radius arcs and the machine cut the stencils: again I stuck these on and painted over the gap. It took a lot of touching up of cream, black, and red to get it right - this project’s teaching me patience if nothing else!

Finally , I painted the embossed lettering using a kind of painting stylus. Fill the little pot and draw the lines. It’s tricky getting the angle right to avoid getting tramlines, but I got it eventually!

I’m really quite pleased with how they look.

I do still need to give them a couple of coats of varnish to protect the paintwork, but they’re essentially done.
